INGHAM COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT PUBLIC HEALTH AMERICORPS is a national service program. Members are not employees, volunteers or interns.

SERVICE DETAILS

Term of Service: January 26, 2026 to September 30, 2026 (35 weeks)

Slot Type and Minimum Service Hours: 900 hrs

ABOUT THE HOST SITE

LoveJoy Community Services is a non-profit organization that provides residential care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our passion for supporting and empowering individuals in a community setting started with one facility in 2007 which has grown into four residential care homes in the Detroit and Lansing, MI areas. MEMBER IMPACT

The Community Sustainability Specialist will play a key role in building the organizational capacity of a nonprofit developer establishing a Community Land Trust (CLT) and sustainable living community in Lansing, MI. This initiative integrates affordable housing, food security, and climate resilience to create a model for sustainable neighborhood development.

The Community Sustainability Specialist will strengthen the nonprofit’s capacity through partnership development, outreach, database management, and impact tracking —laying the foundation for long-term systems change that expands access to affordable housing, eliminates food insecurity, and supports a clean, resilient environment.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Increase organizational capacity to deliver sustainable housing and food initiatives.
  • Contribute to building a network of community and institutional partners to support long-term CLT success.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of communication strategies to sustain operations and community engagement beyond the grant term.
  • Establish 2 new community and institutional partnerships.
  • Contribute to a sustainability and impact framework for the organization.
  • Develop a community engagement toolkit through documentation and evaluation of community engagement processes.
  • Support the development of a communications and social media strategy that highlights the organization’s sustainability, housing, and food access impact.
  • Create outreach templates, brochures, and digital content to promote community stories and build community partnerships
  • Research and propose 1-2 media or institutional partnerships for public awareness.
  • Support outreach efforts for sustainable housing development, community ownership, and environmental justice through storytelling and public education.
  • Map and engage local stakeholders (residents, community groups, universities, businesses, and public agencies) who can contribute to the sustainable living community.
  • Assist with the coordination of 2 community engagement events that connect residents and partners around sustainable housing and food initiatives.
  • Assist in creating impact reports to communicate the initiative’s successes.

Minimum Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • Commitment to the mission of equity, sustainability, and community-driven development.
  • Experience or interest in outreach, communications, or community development.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse community stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Canva and social media tools.

Desired Knowledge and Skills :

  • Website development experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or experience in urban planning, environmental sustainability, or sustainable agriculture

Service Conditions:

  • In person in Lansing, Michigan.
  • Some responsibilities may qualify for teleservice
  • Laptop provided to Member.
  • Local residency environment; Outside – subject to weather conditions (heat, rain, etc.)

Service Schedule:

· General schedule to be determined between with regular availability during business hours of 8am-5pm with some evenings and weeks as needed based on program requirements

  • Members are required to participate and attend monthly ICHD Public Health AmeriCorps professional development, quarterly ICHD AmeriCorps professional development, participate in events including national service days, and regional and local service projects.
  • Sick or personal days are allowed, but members lose possible days to earn the required number of hours needed to successfully complete the term of service. There are additional benefits offered if the member has a compelling personal circumstance.

Host Site - Professional Development and Training:

· None

AMERICORPS PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

· Participate in monthly ICHD PHA AmeriCorps Training and Professional Development in topics like grant-writing and resume development.

· Participate in National Days of Service (9/11 Day of Service, MLK Day of Service, Russ Mawby Regional Day of Service, Youth Volunteer Day)

· Attend AmeriCorps orientation at the Ingham County Health Department

· All members will participate in an end of service performance evaluation

· All members will be required to submit bi-weekly time sheets, quarterly data reports, and all other data tasks requested by the Host Site

Public Health AmeriCorps Members should possess:

· a desire and ability to work with a diverse group of people;

· a willingness to learn and serve others;

· an ability to work independently and in a team environment successfully, and

· strong organizational, writing, and oral communication skills, and a high attention to detail

AmeriCorps Program Eligibility

· be 17 years or older at the start of service (no upper age limit)

· be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien

· Agree to and pass a national service criminal history check with eligibility verification in accordance with 45 CFR 2540.202.

AmeriCorps Commitment and Benefits –

· Loan forbearance and interest repayment available for eligible loans

· End of Service Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $3,697.50

· $25 per month allowance for mileage reimbursement during each month of service for service related travel

· Up to $130 available in professional development funds

Compensation for AmeriCorps are a living allowance and dependent on the number of service hours agreed to. The living stipend is $11,000 for 900 service hours.
