Job Description

The Temporary HLS Senior Software Engineer (Seasonal Consultant) provides consulting support to the Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) High Level Software (HLS) development team.

Essential Functions:

  • Design, develop and test high level software as directed by the HLS Manager including but not limited to:
    • DLNIRSP Plugin & Detailed Display conversion from IDL to Python.
    • MCAO telemetry development
    • WFC software maintenance
    • WFC non-HLS code conversion from IDL to Python.
    • Hardware, OS and software upgrades on wfc-m5-intf-pc and wfc-lt servers.
    • Other HLS tasks that include scientific computing, signal processing, real-time processing, PyQT GUI design and implementation and Python computing.
  • Work with other members of the High-Level Software group to facilitate software development and integration at the observatory.
  • Communicate effectively with the HLS team and others at the observatory.
  • All AURA employees are responsible for the proper management and control of all AURA property within their work area, whether assigned to them or someone else. This responsibility includes reporting any known missing, stolen, or non-working property in their work area to their supervisor or the AURA Property Officer.

Other Functions:

  • Work is part-time temporary, generally limited to one to two days per week with occasional full-time hours as required by NSO/DKIST activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in engineering, computer science or other relevant field, or equivalent experience.
  • 15+ years of experience with scientific programming including Python, C++ and Java.
  • Experience with standard software development tools such as Jira, Git, IntelliJ, PyCharm, CLion, Maven and make.
  • Excellent organizational skills and good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of astronomical telescopes and instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with astronomical observatories and observing practices.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively in English, including preparation of comprehensive reports.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience and interest in DKIST related observational research and science analysis.
  • Previous experience developing instruments for solar telescopes.
  • Experience with astronomical observing practices.

  • May occasionally need to position self to maintain computer and related tools.
  • Seldomly needed to move objects up to 10 pounds.
  • Constant communication with other individuals. Must be able to discern and exchange information as appropriate to the situation.
  • Constant need to distinguish, discern, and identify a variety of objects and fine details with accuracy.
  • Occasional work at high elevation summit sites may be required (summit elevations range from 6,800 feet to 14,000 feet)
